People occasionally ask me why she was laughing. When she walked in to my studio space, I immediately was struck by the beauty of her hands that I am sure had dug thousands of potatoes out of the earth and I really wanted those hands in the picture, so I used the real Polaroid camera synced to my strobes and went on my knees to make sure the hands were prominent. At that moment, she laughed and my assistant asked her why she was laughing. She said she thought I was taking a picture of her belly.
The large photograph in the show hung in my bathroom for years next to an equally big mirror to gently remind people what real beauty is.
